Yes . The word is commonly pronounced as " Catawba " in parts of East Texas . I didn't know what a "catalpa " tree was until I joined TFF .

I remember when I lived in the woods outside Crockett. At the fish farm we had a grove of catalpa trees. One day the county agent told me, "you need to thin out that catalpa grove or them trees'll get all wormy."
That was the point! We'd take the huge worms off the tree and freeze them in corn meal. Then use them for catfish bait. Best there was.

In South Mississippi and South Louisiana you might here them called "toggle" worms. Great bait...

The bait shop in Chandler by the river sold them but that was years ago.
