Road trip suggestions - 08/24/12 02:27 PM

Folks,

It is time for me to take another road trip. I am planning to put a kayak on the roof, a few rods (fly and spinning), a guitar, and a cooler and head out from Austin. I am shooting for a 6-7 day itinerary in mid-late October. Don't want to kayak crazy rapids anywhere, but do enjoy a nice float and wading.

I plan on doing it on the cheap (No guides, no resorts or pricey lodges, etc).

Primary objective is to catch a bunch of fish and see some great scenery.

Here are a few of my preliminary ideas. 1) Head to Broken Bow for the Lower Mountain Fork (2 days). 2) Go up to Arkansas to the White or Little Red or Buffalo River(s (3 days). 3) Swing by Caddo Lake on the way back.

Thoughts for any of this?

Near Doniphan Missouri there's a river called Current River and it's a great place to fish and canoe/kayak. I used to squirrel hunt up there at a place called Buffalo Creek.

Sounds to me like you have some good plans already. Head up to the Buffalo for 3days-great scenery and smallmouth fishing, then stop at Caddo on the way home. Camp at Goat Island when on Caddo.
