??TROUT FISHING BELOW CAYNON LAKE??

Well to start I don’t know where to start this topic because there isn’t much trout fishing on TFF and especially in the summer in Texas . I was wondering if anyone knew if the Trout Fishing below Caynon Lake Dam was any good in the summertime. I was told the water is cold enough to keep rainbows year round but didn’t know if it was a hoax or not. I would be interested in tossing in a fly as I have heard of some trout being over the 25 inch mark in the Guadalupe.

I believe it depends largely on the amount of water release from canyon lake, I've heard once the water tops 70 degrees it's over. Maybe someone with more experience will know for sure though.

I've heard the same. If you're not too far away, just go and make a day of it. Be fun anyway. Take your whatever with you and after a little time on the river go ahead and take river road to Gruene, eat at the Grist Mill. Baja BBQ on the lake is fun too.

The water temp never goes up above the mid 50º. The water is drawn off the bottom of the lake. That is why there is a sustainable trout fishery below Canyon.

YES temps top 70 degrees in the hotter dryer summers downstream from the dam while still in the “sustainable trout area”. FYI: those trout are still there...although tougher to catch. Go fishing!

Too bad all the links don't work, seeing the water temp at all the locations from the dam downstream is a telling tell.

I have no proof of this and a lot of factors influence how fast the water temps rise as you move downstream such as flow, air temps...but I have heard my entire life that the Guad below Caynon Dam during the summer months rises approximately 1 degree for each river mile you go downstream. Never carried a thermometer but “unscientifically” I can tell you the water temps close to the dam take your breath away and numb you while taking out clear down by Greene Texas(20+ river miles) after a long paddle the water is just pleasantly cool.

I's been a long time ago, but I remember wading out in the water I think at the first road below the dam, and within a few minutes my feet were numb and blue. It was so cold it hurt.

I used to walk up from the 3rd crossing years back and catch several different species incl rainbows on small silver/purple spinners. Good times and cool water!

I think the best quote above was "GO FISHING". I grew up in this area and just being in the presence of all that nature provides on the Guadalupe is satisfying in itself. Catching fish is just the bonus. Before the great flood, my buddies and I could catch huge striper on the river close to horseshoe bend in the cold months. We would throw artificial trout baits and just hold on.

you should see what happens when somebody threw out live trout

I am not going to admit anything, but some of the biggest striper I have ever seen in TX were caught out of there on live trout back in the late 80's and early 90's.

This stretch holds MANY record striper for the state.

Just got back from a week on the White River below Bull Shoals. Caught about 125 rainbow trout between five of us. Also caught 5 brown trout up to 5 lbs. Had a great time. Took my 3 sons and a nephew. Would recommend it to anyone. We will go back. Will post pictures later.

There are 2 gravel parking lots below the dam where the river comes out. Park and walk a ways and fish.
