What are these?

Wish I had a photo. I see them at the ramps along with minnows. They have a slightly elongated body like a bass and fairly wide vertical stripes, similar to a Sheepshead. I was thinking young bass, but the wide vertical stripes threw me off.

Log perch?

No, I looked those up. The stripes on these are wider, uniform in width and pretty evenly spaced. If you were in salt, they would look like miniature sheepshead. Most appear to be 3-4" in length. I tried to look them up on TPWD website but they have completely destroyed their website and you can't find any fish ID info any more.

Something like this? (Tilapia) If so, yes they are legal if you catch them there. EDIT: No, they are not legal. TAC 57.122 They're invasive so take as many as you like, just don't bring any in from anywhere else. It's illegal to even own them without a permit.

No! You can keep them to eat but upon catching, you are required to immediately remove the intestines. Do NOT get caught using tilapia for bait on public reservoirs. Even those waters where Tilapia are present, like Fairfield. Catch, gut and put on ice. Do not filet the fish until off the water.

According to the restrictions, you're not allowed to possess or transport tilapia/grass carp/etc. I'd imagine they'd still be fine as cut bait, but it never hurts to play it safe.

Edit: Did a bit more searching, wasn't listed too clearly on the TPWD website. From Texas Administrative Code 57.122: it is an offense for any person to release into the water of this state, import, sell, purchase, transport, propagate, or possess any species, hybrid of a species, subspecies, eggs, seeds, or any part of any species defined as a harmful or potentially harmful exotic fish, shellfish, or aquatic plant

So no, it's not at all legal to use as any type of bait. 57.122
