A buddy of mine asked if I wanted to join him on a guided trip out of Sargent in early February. I've never been winter trout fishing and wanted to see if my thought process was in line. I am leaning toward bigger baits (Corky Fatboy, SheDog)fished slowly since the trout should be looking for the most energy with the least energy burned. Probably lighter colors due to water clarity unless there is heavy cloud cover. I certainly hope the guide isn't looking for us to pick the location so that should be covered.
Am I way off?

You're on the right track. There are some real good guides out of Sargent. I'd just follow his advice and keep the camera ready.

You may want to try some shorelines on a sunny day. Trout will come up out of deep water and tend to lay in the mud as it's warmer than the water temp. Bait will travel the shorelines and trophy trout are just waiting for a good dinner. Top waters is what you need here. Try some Bone colored ones.

That sun does work some magic on that dark colored mud. Bone is one of my favorite colors. I'm usually throwing a bone colored spook jr.
