Just wondering what everyone prefers for throwing top waters and soft plastics while wading the surf, baitcasters or spinning? Rod lengths?

I prefer bait casters. Spinning reels can sometimes hang down in the water.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards a baitcaster. I have a lot more experience with spinning reels, but I think I will enjoy bait casters once I really get them down. Right now I am leaning towards a Lews BB1 inshore with a medium power fast action rod.
