I'll be down in Rockport in a couple of weeks doing a little fishing. Nothing big, just a mini vacation for myself. I'm staying in a place with a pier and will do most of my fishing from there.
While I'm there, I'm going to put out a crab trap to see if I can get a few blue crabs big enough to keep.
My question is: What's the best way to keep them for a couple of days until I can get them back home?
Can I put them in the refrigerator for a couple of days or should I freeze them, keep them on ice...?
If I thought that someone wouldn't walk away with my trap, I would just cull the small ones out and leave the legal ones in the trap. However, I believe that my trap would disappear if I left it out all the time.

The best way to keep crabs alive is by keeping them cool and damp.

I put the crabs in an ice chest with an open drain. Cover the crabs with a burlap bag, piece of soft foam or an old piece of carpet. Periodically I sprinkle ice chest on top of the burlap. The ice melts cool water and it trickles down over the crabs keeping them cool but not cold. Make sure you put a block under the ice chest so all the water drains out the plug. Otherwise the buildup of un-aerated water will actually kill them.

Usually good for 2 or 3 days sometimes longer. I hope this helps.

Thanks glennkoks. Can you freeze them when they are alive and keep them frozen until you cook them?

Not really, they get mushy when you do that.
