Good afternoon,

My family and I will be heading to Galveston for the 4th of July weekend, we will be staying in a hotel right off the 6 1st Street fishing pier. I also plan on surf fishing, through the weekend. My question is how is that pier for fishing? What should I rig for? And if anyone else is going to be in the area and wants a fishing partner?

Hey Kevin, sure wish I was going down, I would hook up with you. I try to stay away from Galveston for the 4th, it is going to be way to crazy. I wish you the best of luck though. I live just South of Dallas in Waxahachie and I am always looking for someone to tag along. PM your number to me and I'll have next time I go, which is generally every other month.

Also, stay up to date on the local reports on issues that the recent floods and Hurricane Bill presented. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/natio...oding/29209529/

Thanks fly tier I have lost some fishing buddies over the years and need some newer ones. PM sent. I live in Plano and fish all over. Could you recommend some beaches that might be less crowded and still decent for some surf fishing?

When you get to the Seawall, make a right and head past the 61st Pier. You are going to head down to the third water tower right and make a left onto the beach. My first two years going out there we caught amazing black drum. The past few years have been kind of slow for drum but we usually catch enough whiting to make a few good meals. I went out a few weeks ago and my uncle caught a nice blacktip shark.

Really, if you are going for sport then there is probably a better spot. But if you are looking for decent eating, I rig up fresh dead shrimp on a drop shot leader and a 3oz weight and it's good to go.

I also live in the Dallas area. I usually drive to Galveston on holiday weekends like the 4th of July, but I won't make the trip next week. Let me warn you that it is going to be crazy and crowded. The west side of the island is less crowded if you drive a little bit. Just turn right when you hit the seawall and find a beach access. The longer you drive, the less crowded the beach is until you arrive to San Luis Pass. SLP can be pretty crowded though. You can set up camp for the day on any of the beach accesses and fish the surf while your family enjoys the beach. Let me know if you have questions.

By the way, it was on the news this week that bacteria levels are dangerously high in Galveston so that would deter the crowds a bit.

San Luis Pass across the toll is a favorite place of mine. Get there early though.

I will be going with my wife and 4 year old son, so I'm definitely not interested in a party beach, just want to relax and do some fishing.

I did see the bacteria warning but from the articles I read it looks like it will be cleared up by next weekend.

I typically fish in Surfside with my kayak so I appreciate all the Galveston tips guys.

Looking forward to some tight lines.
