So I am going on a family vacation July 26- August 1. We are going to crystal beach, and I want to do some surf/pier fishing. I don't want to spend money to go out on a charter, but will still be doing a lot of fishing. I want to know what kind of fish will be the best around this time.

No piers on Crystal Beach anymore. You can catch trout, red, whitings, shark, croaker and ever so abundant hardhead in the surf. Elaborate on the gear you'll be fishing with and we can help you out more.

I will be heading out to Galveston next week and would love to hear some suggestions also. Will be 4 of us with 10ft+ surf rods each and probably 7fters to throw artificials and topwater.

That's actually why I was wanting to know what would be in the surf so I could buy my self some gear. I don't want to catch hard head, whiting, but would love to catch trout and sharks. What rods/reels would you recommend for sharks $150 or less price range. Also what bait could I get a shark, red or trout on?

You can probably buy a penn jigmaster 500 reel and a 10-12 ft ugly stik for right around $150.00. Spool it with 30 lb big game line. There is a bait shop on the east side of rollover, south side of the road that sells some nice heavy duty leaders that come with big circle hooks. Depending on current, put you on a 4-6oz spider weight and a chunk of fresh cut mullet, whiting, croaker, stingray or sand trout on the hook. Try to walk out as far as you can and cast it out and then walk it back to shore and put it in a holder. Back off the drag and turn on the clicker and wait. You can catch sharks or bull reds this way. If you're going for specks, fish a spook or mirrolure in the surf. You can also throw a popping cork with live shrimp or live mullet. You just need to look for the bait and normally the specks aren't too far behind. Good luck
