Hi Guys... I've only recently started fishing (all of three times) and at the weekend went over to Sylvan Park.... Saturday was using dead shrimp and didn't catch a thing... everyone else didn't appear to catch anything either ! Sunday I returned, tried artificial bait, however again didn't have a nibble.... in the afternoon, tried over at Bayridge Road in the ship channel and again didn't catch a thing. I'm hoping to catch something I can take home and cook for dinner, please could someone recommend a location close to Houston and bait that would give me a fighting chance of catching something worthwhile.... Two days without a nibble is putting me of my new found sport !!

If you aint got patience I don't think fishing is for you.... I have fished all my life since I was like 6 years old, and I have gone out many times and been skunked, came home with a big fat 0. For me it's more of a relaxing time, when you get in them and have those days where you can chunk an unbaited stainless hook and pull in a flounder or speck just from the flash of the hook. Wellll those days seem to make up for the days you come home with an empty stringer.
I am unfamiliar with the area you are wetting your line at but the best advice I can give you is wait till the evening and get under some lights on a pier with some spec rigs. They aint too expensive buy every color combonation you think might work. Buy some glow in the dark ones too. Go find a pier and get under the first 3-6 lights from the bank (Hence shallow water) and get you a pint of LIVE SHRIMP and a couple popping cork rigs. Just add hook (Mustad 3/0 wide gaps) and tie the Barrel swivle to your line. Once the sun sets you will see the trout popping either shrimp or ghost minnows on the top. I always throw past the edge of the light and work either my bait or spec rigs back into the light. This should atleast get you back interested in the fishing thing. If you have any Jetty access around you try them early morning to possibly all day right now. Use the popping corks with live shrinp or small croaker, pin perch and hold on!!!! At the jetties atleast 25# test line. On the pier for trout 10-15# should be fine. Good luck and don't get too frustrated fishing is a great sport and if nothing else try to enjoy the time to unwind.

You need to target the right time to fish. A falling tide is usually better than other time but an incoming tide can be good too. Don't waste your time on a slack tide. Early morning and late evening will be productive.
You need to find proper water color (green). Brown/chocolate milk water usually only produces hardheads.
You need to find locations that hold fish. Look for signs, such as bait, nervous water, oil slicks on the surface and predatory fish actively feeding.
Once you've learned what to look for it will get easier for you and you will enjoy more success. To learn some of this it may be worth it to save your pennies and hire a guide once or twice to get the hang of things.
Good luck

thanks guys...
i really appreciate the feedback and advice.
i'm very much looking forward to learning to fish, i'm beginning to realize that there's slightly more to it than dangling a worm and hook into any old bit of water...
Cheers A

You're not going to catch much of anything at Sylvan. Head down the highway a little bit to Galveston, Sea wolf park, and San Luis Pass.
