Are you guys using Monofilament? Fluorocarbon? Braid?

For those of you using Braid are you using a leader? if so how long?

Going to the Baffin Bay Rod and Gun lodge this weekend and need some help...Thanks in advance.

20# powerpro goes on spinning reels for plastics. No leader.
15# Ande back country on casting reels for topwater and spoons.

On a casting reel, I always stick with mono. Other types of line cause problems and any benefits just don't outweigh the drawbacks. If there is super clear water I'll use a 2-3 ft flouro leader.

On a spinning reel I use braid with a leader. Learn to tie the FG knot and you can use a longer leader and not have to re-tie it all the time.

When picking the braid size, I like to keep it as small as I can. You can get an extra 30 ft or so on your cast when switching from 20# to 15#. Your reel will have listed different line sizes and how much the spool will hold of each. Pick the very lightest size, then get a braid with that diameter or slightly smaller.

The spinning reel I use for inshore is 15# power pro with 8' of 20# mono or flouro leader. Tie the FG knot, and there is no issue at all casting the long leader.

We have yet to see any advantage of using a leader. Had a few insist it did but catch numbers don�t justify the trouble.

I will concede that point for most parts of the Texas coast. Get into some clear water though, and it makes a difference. For me, it is more of a mental thing. Right or wrong, it just feels like you are supposed to have a leader on it.

20# power pro on everything with a mono leader except popping cork rods. mono on them, just can't get the feel of the cork with braid.

No question fishing is all about confidence. If you believe in what you�re doing it generally proves out.

I have always liked something like 30# Sufix 832 and about 3 feet of ~20# fluorocarbon connected with an Albright Special knot. But like others have said nylon mono or straight braid works, too. Fishing around shell or rocks, braid can take a beating and come apart. A little tough section of fluorocarbon leader can help there.

The issues I�ve had with tying braid directly to the lure, topwaters, is that the braid, for me, tended to get hung up in hooks or split rings on the lure. I sometimes would work a topwater super slow with long pauses and I believe that�s what would cause the tangling issues. I have more confidence in my knots I tie with the fluorocarbon to the lure than with braid.

If you have microguides on your rods, the Albright knot could hang up in those so you might be better off using straight mono or braid. The Albright special isn�t a fat knot. A little bit of UV cure over the knot like a loon knot sense can make the knot even smoother and more secure.

The guys I fish with are nylon monofilament users, I think Trilene. They typically catch a bunch of fish so it doesn�t mess them up. Neither of them like braid and how it handles. We all use baitcasting reels.

The great thing about this is that there are a lot of options.

One spinning reel has #15 power pro braid and the other has #20 power pro braid. My bait caster has fluorocarbon #15. Has always worked out quite well.

I use 65 # braid with 2-3 foot 20 pound sea gear florocarbon leader on my bait casters. Catch more fish with leader than without.
Spinning rod I use mono.

I tie my braid to one end of swivel and leader to the other.

Look into the uni knot system. Can use 2 uni knots for line to line instead of 2 blood knots or line to lure.
Can even tie to lure with an open loop so get more action.

Power pro 30, with big game 20/30lbs mono leader. Leader for me isn't about the fish seeing the line, it is a way to control the decent of the lure. I find 30lbs with 1/8th weight sinks perfectly.

I usually keep my leader at 18inches.

I use braid on both reels. Spin and bait.

I use to help a Pharmaceutical sales rep take his clients to the coast. In return for being the butler I got to go on all the guided fishing trips every time I was with the guides they all use monofilament leaders. That's why I got in the habit of doing it.
