My cousin and I are going on this trip and wanted to see if any other guys (or gals) on here are going. Also, this is my first tuna trip so any suggestions from you old salts would be super helpful. When I made my reservation I picked the brain of one of the deckhands to see what gear I needed to bring. I have 2 Penn 4/0 set ups with 50lb mono on both. I hear that those work OK, but not great. I think for my first trip, I may give these a whirl, but am also interested in bringing/buying a big spinning outfit. Any links to recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The 4/0 will work for chunking but if you get into doing this regular you will want (notice not need) an upgrade there.

What kind of price range are you looking at for the spinner setup? This can go from a few hundred to a few thousand. I believe there is a thread in the offshore section or saltwater section titled something like budget reels with good info in it.

The basic setup for tuna regulars is a 4/0 size something for chunking/trolling, a spinner for casting, and a jigging setup.

Highly recommend dont spend a bunch (which is relative to you) on equipment until you have made a couple trips because you will know much better what you want.

Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

Thanks Oldtackster,

I am looking at the Penn Battle right now. Don't really want to spend a ton, but also looking at the spinfisher V, both in the 10500 model.

We actually moved our trip to December 5-6. If anyone else is going on this trip, let me know!

Thanks.
