I come to the coast several times a year to wadefish for trout. Last week my favorite spinning reel (gave up the ghost) and I'm in search for another. The reel that crashed is no longer produced, any suggestions?

I have no loyalty to any reel or brand, but I will say the Okumas seem to be holding up the best.

You can't go wrong Penn or Shimano, just keep clean and rinsed and they will last years.

All of the major manufacturers build good reels. The best bang for your buck would probably be Okuma; I have a few of them and they've held up well -- with reasonable care.

I pulled two off the rack that I've had very good success with. First is, let's see, ummm...it's a Penn CLL 5000 Live Liner, second is an Okuma EOS Si-55a. The Penn is a bait-runner style, the Okuma is strictly a lure slinger. I've had them both for several years and with minimal maintenance no strange grinding noises yet.

I have a Penn Battle that has been a very good reel for salt water, although I wish I could get better casting distance with it. I had a Shimano that cast better but that did not last as long. I also had a good Quantum. As another guy posted, there a good quality reels from most manufacturers. I even have a 25 dollar Shakespeare spinning reel that I bought that has been a good one.

As I have said, I'm a wadefisherman and I throw nothing but plastic, cast after, cast after cast.

I have 2 of the okuma trio high speed. One is the 55 and the other a 30. I use the small one for wading for flounder, reds, etc. They have held up very well so far.

I fished with Penn battles and they will hold up to lots of abuse, but they are HEAVY. I picked up a stradic from the bargain cave and it is noticeably lighter and ( running the risk of sounding like a sissy) less fatiguing. if youre casting 1000 times in a trip it adds up

Weight is very important, especially when wading and holding the rig up out of the water all day. You can really tell the difference at the end of the day.
