I have been fishing Galveston bay for several years now and I'm tired of buying shrimp. I mainly fish artificials on my home lake (lake Livingston. What are some go to baits to throw around the reefs? I'll be headed down there next week and want to try something new. Thanks for any input.

Please don't say hire a guide. I tried that and it was a huge waste of money.

Gulp Shrimp in New Penny under a popping cork or on a jighead are about as productive as live shrimp. Especially because you will be making more casts/hour not having to fish out bait from the livewell/bucket. There are MANY plastics that work well. Since you probably bass fish on Livingston, check out the spinner baits that are used for redfish. You should feel at home throwing one of those. Good Luck.

Plum/Chartreuse Saltwater Bass Assassin is my go to soft plastic I use year round to catch trout, reds and flounder.

I would have to say you went with the wrong guide. Or you did not ask enough questions. If I see clients doing something wrong I try to help them. If they seem to have it down I kick back and let the fish hammer down.

Plastic on a jighead, with or without a cork, topwaters, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, spoons; all work well.

I too am a bass fisherman that goes down to Galveston a few times a year with family. They are always wanting me to bring rod and reels and take them fishing. I have no clue but we will fish off of a pier and I did actually catch a small sting ray once on a texas rig soft plastic. Locals almost fought each other for me to give it to them to use for cut bait. Never thought about just taking spinnerbaits, swim baits and swim jigs and just fishing them like I normally do. I would love to catch some trout or reds. Wouldn't even mind if a shark or something bit and spooled off my line. That would be exciting.

If it catches fish in fresh water it will catch them in salt. The big difference is the corrosion resistance; freshwater specific baits will oxidize very quickly in a saltwater environment. Saltwater baits are designed for the environment, but still require freshwater rinsing and drying before you put them in a box.

Thanks for that info. I am thinking my reels would probably need a good cleaning once I get back also.

Stack your freshwater rods in the motel room shower, turn it on to flush them, pat them dry, and fish the next day. You can do a more thorough cleaning when you get home.
