Staying in Gulfport for a few days in June. Is there decent fishing along the beach or do you have to go out to the islands?

I fish on a 14 ft piece of plastic.

Bout 20 years ago me and my family used to go there and fish in the surf with a speck rig tipped with shrimp and catch some nice whiting, croaker, sand trout and the ocassional speck. I haven't been there in years and I'm sure things have changed since the hurricanes.

Fishing is much better at the Islands from what I understand.
We have been there many times, always fished out of a boat,
either mine or with a guide. Never put in a line till we
got to the islands. They dumped a lot of debris in Mississippi sound after the storm , making fish habitat. I'm sure the
numbers are public , if you do a little research.
The Capt. I used is out of business since Katrina.

There are some fishing piers just across the bay going
east, at a state or federal park , but I forget the name.

Thanks guys. That is kind of what I expected. I'll probably take a rod or two and just soak some bait. Serious fishing is the next week in Venice anyway.
