Hey folks, I'll be taking my 21.5' boat from Austin to Corpus Christi this weekend to do a little bay fishing. I'd like to fish around the jetties a little bit, but my concern is how rough the water is.
I've only been through the jetties at Port A once, and I remember the waves being extremely large. Is this normal? Or was I possibly a little too far out near the gulf. I'd love to get into some bull reds this weekend, and I figure fishing the channel around the jetties is my best bet. Any advice on how to do so would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Chase

I've been going through those jetties all my life, just for fun, as deckhand on charter and head boats , as an employee of a Hatteras/Bertram dealer and on my own boats. IVe seen it slick as glass and I was working on the island during the time the wharf cat was spun 360 degrees crossing the bar. You ,,as a mariner will be the only one to make that decision when you eyeball the conditions. 21.5 is plenty in right conditions and the more experienced can handle more challenging conditions where as inexperience can get you killed in a much bigger boat.. There is some skill involved. JUst don't go beyond your skill level.. We almost lost a 31 Bertram when an inexperienced boater In a searay crossed our bow in really bad seas.. Big swell almost dumped him on our bow. We had to jerk both throttles into full reverse to avoid a tragedy.

But if it's calm,,, it's a great area to fish, actually one of my favorite areas. Have an anchor with plenty of line ( I have lost power between the jetties,, not a good thing ) a radio and life jackets.

Even it if is calm BE CAREFUL. Big crew boats coming in with a strong tide can cause bad things to happen!
