Heading to Port A next week and want to do some late night pier or jetty fishing. How am i suppose to keep my bait alive for several hours when all the bait houses close at 8 or 9 o'clock? I have a Mr. Bubbles aerator but the last time i tried to keep it that long half of my shrimp and mullet were dead. Are there bait stands open later that i don't know about or do i need a upgraded aerator? Please educate me.

I guess i should have been more specific. I'm going to buy bait then go back to the house and drink several beers for 3-4 hours then catch some hogs hopefully! Any ideas... cheers

You need to make a good tank with filtration and aeration. Or buy like a greyline or something like that. That will be a bit cumbersome to carry on the jetties.

I bought a 5 gallon bucket w/ aerator at island tackle, bought my bait at port a outfitters about 7:45pm ( they close at 8pm) went back to the house, put a frozen bottle of water in every hour.. til I went to the pier at 11pm every night. Before I arrive at the pier.. I would stop at the jetties on the channel side I would empty some out of the bait bucket and replace it and continue adding a frozen bottle every hour til done.. I had no problem!! Live shrimp catch fish.. Free lining was king for me! Good luck

The amount of water you have in your bait container will make a difference. There is oxygen in the water they put in your container with the bait. The bait will slowly deplete the available oxygen so you must change the water often, keep container in the water you are fishing, or use an aerator to resupply the oxygen the bait uses. Again, the more water the more oxygen so have as much water as you can. Then add the aerator (Mr bubbles is fine) and make sure the bubble stone is ALWAYS in the bottom of the water to get the oxygen into the water better. Use new batteries. 2 D's run for 24 hour easily. Now even though you are using the aerator you STILL NEED to change the water every so often if it looks cloudy or the shrimp are moving around slower. And finally keep your container cool at all times. That is why it is better to place in the water as soon as you can and let the water naturally supply the oxygen. You can just use the aerator to get the bait to the water.
If you cannot find a place to change the water you can buy shrimp and pogey and minnow tablets that help the bait live longer. May give you an extra hour or two in the same water before changing.
good luck.

O2 Setup w/ low flow reg. and a GOOD diffuser , change water now and then. I have put hybrid bait fish in tap water. To get rid of the chlorine, put 2-3 drops of Hydrogen Peroxide in the water. When I did this many years ago, I used a large cooler for keeping bait in.

i fished this morning with a friend and it's close to 100 degrees. he put a little bubble machine on the side of a small(25 quart ?) engle cooler. he drilled holes for the bubble hose in the side of the cooler. we fished untill almost noon and the shrimp were still frisky. we did have some dead ones that we culled and chummed with from time to time. i was very surprised at how well it worked. the bubbler he had was one of the little ones that takes D cell batteries.

My big cooler has a small bilge pump mounted on the outside that filters, recirculates, and sprays water thru small dia. PVC pipe (small holes drilled in the pipe and capped) mounted inside.
