Wading ... or fishing they surf on the beach front is just about as challenging as it gets for actually locating fish. The 'structure' of the surf is the endless sandbars and guts over and over with an occasional pinch flow across the guts. A 'pinch flow' is where the first bar get's narrowed by the beach and the water flowing up the first gut gets pinched and has to flow outward across the set of sand bars and guts... these are great areas typically if you can find an area with finger mullet around. Move around and look for bait schools and don't be shy about fishing the first gut right on the beach in the early mornings before sun up. It's called dawn patrol for a reason.
The other option is not to fish the beach, but fish the jetties. The rock jetties provide a lot of structure for the fish (both trout and reds) in the form of rocks that cut across all those guts and bars. If I was a new surf fisherman, I'd probably tend to fish the jetties more even though it's a bit more effort to rock hop the top of the jetties. Be careful of the algae on the jetties it's very slippery where it grows at the edge of the water wishing the high tide line. Top of the rocks are usually ok. There is a ferry that takes anglers to the north jetty. Bring a back pack with lures and water to drink. Pack light, ... stringer, lures, and water. Hunt the fish!
have fun. t
