Just got down to SPI, we plan on going out on a bay trip (party boat) tomorrow if the weather is ok. But for the rest of the weekend is there a pier to fish off on the island or just the one at Pirates landing? I've got my 6 yr old son with me that just loves to fish. It would be awesome if he could catch a small shark, that would top his vacation.
Thanks, Weston

The old causeway at night is good.

Take a look at the jetty and ship channel in the park at the south most tip of the island. You would have channel fishing on one side and surf fishing on the other.

I'm heading down with my 21 cc June 6th and my family is flying in to join us. I hope to hit the jetties and maybe sneak offshore for the endangered snapper if the weather allows. If not is there any place to stay inside and put them on some sharks or anything to pull some drag? Any help is appreciated.

I believe the only pier open is the one in port isabel. (Pirates landing) the one on the island no longer allows fishing I'm told. Unless you have a boat the old causeway is closed and if the cops come around and your on it, well good luck.... The surf and the jetties are likely the only way your going to catch a shark if you are land based fishing. As far as catching a shark they love live palm mullet or piggy perch. And as stated above you should try the jetties. Go about 1/3 down and cast into the surf side. It is A little treacherous for a 6 year old though... if you have means of getting to it, I would recommend the surf if the sea weed isn't too bad. Pm me if you have any questions.

Mesiquita flats near south bay has a nice bull shark that was hanging around my friend fishing there this morning. I bet he would give a good pull...

Go to the surf, catch a whiting on shrimp, throw the cut whiting out and catch a shark, possibly a big red too.
You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Fishing is pretty good right now. You can get into sharks are the jetty but they seem to stay away for the most part. Best bet is a live whiting in the 2 or 3 gut in the surf. Not sure I want to be on the water this weekend. I have seen way to many boats being pulled in on trailers.
