I'm going sand bass fishing this weekend on the Nolan river near Joshua. Any advice for fishing down there?

I am not familiar with the Nolan around Joshua, but do know a little about the Nolan from Lake Whitney up to where the fisherman walk in off 933. I spent 2 days last Wednesday and Thursday catching white bass in that area after launching my zodiac at Nolan River Park. It seems like the whites moved up to the shallow area just down stream from the walk in park off 933 just outside of the town of Blum. I did catch near limits on both days, but was disappointed in the size. My largest was 14" while on my last two trips to Sabine, and Somerville this would have been my smallest...Lawton

Sabine and Somerville. Yup, both of those places will spoil you when it comes to size of fish.

Way back in the early 90's we would park at Rock Creek and walk in. Before internet. Depending on lake level we would walk up or downstream. Tandem white flea flys on light line. We would go early and late. So when we walked in after 4pm people with empty stringers would just look at us like we were late to the party. Nope by sundown we had limits.

Light line, or just heavy enough to not have an average sized hybrid break loose with a good drag setting. I use 6 lb most of the time. 4 lb at certain spots. Flies work well. As far as colors, ask some of the fly experts here. Crappie/maribou jigs. Chart head, darker green body, white tail/feather (hard to find anymore) have produced way more sandies for me over the years than any other color(s). Roadrunners/curly tails. The basics, white works well in clearish water, chart works well in water that's stained/muddy. Both work a lot of times. A red head and white body in any of these mentioned will usually work well. I've had various success with the small, floating Rapala jointed shad. I'll usually only tie it on if I'm bored, but I sometimes use it in very shallow rapids/current where I know/suspect some fish are holding in a small break just to mix things up. It's 100% about the way you present it in that scenario though. Smaller 2-3" swimbaits/twitchbaits work really well too. I've also got quick limits using small/regular rat-l-traps and 4M11's via boat on the Nolan when they're holding closer down to the Brazos and where the two meet. Sometimes they like a certain bait slow and steady. Sometimes very slow to even more slow. Most of the time they love a pause, whether working it slow or slightly aggressive.
