I am using an old Penn 350 level line baitcaster. I want to get out past the second sand bar. I can wade out a little bit and cast. How long should it be? Are there any really junky brands to stay away from?

I'd loose the level wind reel. That takes a lot away from distance casting. Look at a penn squall or diawa saltist. An old penn squidder can be souped up for surf casting pretty inexpensively. I'd you go that route, make sure you get one with an aluminum spool. That being said I use different long rods for different applications but 11-12' will certainly get it out there. YouTube pendulum casting also. Hope that helps a bit.

FTU sells a decent surf rod and I personally like the Penn Prevail rods.. With a Sealine 40 they will handle anything in the surf.

St. croix , they have the best quality and warranty combination imo. $55 bucks for a new one. I just sent a twenty year old surf rod a Ron Arra surf pro in and am getting a 10 6' mojo surf rod in return. Tough great quality and service. No question for this old river rat

My favorite rod is the 12ft Beefstick. That's all I use now for hitting up the bank. I went from using Lamiglas To Beefstick . The best part is they are 30$. If one breaks it can easily be replaced without breaking the bank. I chunk 5oz + bait and power cast them and have not had one break yet and i have had them for a year now .
