My friend and I were fishing a pond for blue gill and we started to notice some fish that defiantly weren't sun fish. I threw a worm and hook over in one of the fishes direction and it took it. ... I'm just assuming its a hybrid of some sort. iv seen people catch tilapia out of this pond so I'm figuring that and something else.

Good question you should post it in the rough fish section as well see if anyone knows. It might be a tilapia but it is a strange looking one if it is.

After looking at it, it also looks like it could be a cichlid of some kind

Yes it does resemble a cichlid but i thought they couldn't survive in water below 70

I have a small pond that I put some cichlids in. They lived until the pond dried up.

I've been looking around and I think it is a red devil cichlid hybrid of some sort.

There are native cichilds in Texas. The Rio Grande Cichild from far south texas. Looks like a petstore fish that was released back to nature lol

Its funny, I saw this post and when I picked my daughter up from daycare I looked in their fish tank and saw the exact same fish. I'll try and get a picture and post it to show they are the same. This was a pet fish that was released.
