If you mean hook, we recommend a #4 or #6 treble hook.

I'm thinking he means those "socks" you capture the bait in; maybe the plastic tubes with the holes in them that fit over the line and down on the treble hook. Is the plastic tube better than the "socks" or the sponge?-p-

Tubes and sponges are for dip bait. Hooks are for punch bait.

Thanks I was talking about the holders not the hook, like the sponge.

I fish with Stubbys dough bait mainly. But I have caught fish on punch baits. Now if you are fishing a good lake with lots of catfish you can catch loads of catfish on Catfish Charlie. So I have proven to myself at lake fork that I catch more and bigger fish on Stubbys. But when I run out of Stubbys I have a tub of catfish Charlie in the boat. Now I am not a fan of using sponges, tubes or worms to hold bait on. I prefer to keep my fishing simple. simple to me is using a number 4 or 6 treble and putting dough bait on it. I also prefer not using a weight because I can tell when my bait has been stolen.

Tubes and sponges are for dip bait. Hooks are for punch bait. A good punch bait don't need a sponge. I would listen to this guy. Been fishing his punch bait for years. #4 treble. What brand of bait are you using? That might help get your answer for sponge or not.

If the wind is too strong to use a slip cork when using Stubby's, try using a Little Stinkers tear drop lure. Pack the bait in and fish it with Carolina rig on the bottom. I am limited to bank fishing though.

What brand of bait are you using? That might help get your answer for sponge or not. Punch bait does not need a sponge and you just use small treble hooks. If it is too runny, find some cattails and dry them. Use them to give your punch bait thicker or more viscosity.
