I'm having a bit of trouble when it comes to cat fishing here lately. I live about 50 yards from Lake Ray Hubbard off 66 by the old bridge, go fishing frequently out there with shad and minnows. The problem I'm having is getting the fish (when I get a bite) is to "fully commit" to taking my bait. I can sit out there all afternoon with the wind in my face and only get 4 bites and no fish on the bank

Gear:
9' & 12' surf rods
30lb test monofilament line
shad or minnows
generic J hooks that are size 4 maybe 5

Not sure how u set up on fish or your location but try different depths and even cast parallel to shore out in 2-5 ft of water and farther out to 25-30ft...Try different depths...for blues, get your bait off the bottom 1-2ft and switch your hooks to #6-8 circle hook..watch a video on hook set for circle hooks...find a wind blown point close to deep water...make some banker buddies in your area

Might change to a 6/0 circle hook on a Santee cooper rig. Just remember to reel down on them instead of jerking. You might not be seeing/feeling eater fish if those surf rods are fairly heavy

Try circle hooks instead. Do you use the bait whole or cut? Try cut if you haven't already.

Everyone should believe in something; I believe Ill go fishing.

Ok thank yall for the help, Dave P it really depends on the size of the shad on if I cut it or not, Cree whats the best way for me to get my bait to float without a doubt?

A slip sinker and a kahle hook seem to be my best setup.

Or run jugs.

just an update on how my fishing has been since yalls help, I started using a santee rig with my cork about 2-3in from my hook, couldn't find circle hooks so settled for kahle 7/0 hooks and they've been doing alright. now my problem is figuring out when the fish are biting lol but its a work in progress that's making progress

I've fished Ray Hubbard quite a bit the past 8 years or so and have fis he'd pretty much all of the lakes bank access. Both from from the bank and on a boat/kayak. My suggestion would be to go to a different part of the lake. That part of the lake is somewhat "stagnant" compared to other areas because it doesn't get as much incoming water. I look at the lake as having 3 "branches". There's the one by the small 66 bridge that you are talking about (that was completely dried up for years), the other two get new incoming water, one is the area by rowlett creek, the other is the main "branch" that goes way up north and is fed from lavon. I would suggest try one of the two latter "branches".

I would also suggest investing in kayak if you can, Ray Hubbard does exactly have the greatest access for bank fishing in the ideal locations on the lake.

I'd go at night with some live bullheads, carp, or bluegill and go around some rocky shoreline in search for flatheads.

So since its summer and water is warm. My assumption is that catfish are moving to deep waters, right? Or do they come up to the shallows when the sun goes down?
