I have been using gizzard shad, only 3-5" whole threaded on the hook, but I have only caught one fish over 10 lbs. What should I try to get a big blue this time of year?

Perch, goo, and gizzard shad for now. When the water cools off add cut buffalo to that list.

I fish with chicken livers with a liberal amount of garlic powder added (not garlic salt) for channel cats and outfish my partners by 2 to 1 usually when they ARE SLINGING homemade cheese baits, live shad, shrimps, or cut bait bream. At these times I have hooked up (unexpectedly) with some huge blues in shallow waters and biggest to date is over 50 lbs and many in the 25-35 lb class. Nice action on a 12 lb test line if you have the time. Takes a while to wear them down but worth it IMO.

Rod & Reel PB: Blue Cat 53 lbs/12 lb test, Flathead Cat 78 lbs/20 lb test, Channel Cat 17 lbs 12 lb test, Texas common carp 40 lbs/12 lb test, White crappie 2.8 lbs, Black crappie 2.3 lbs all Lake Conroe

Cut bait, the fresher the better. Perch, shad, gaspergoo, carp, buffalo, just about any legal trash fish.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Never thought about using goo for cutbait. I just threw one that was perfect size back. Thanks for the info guys. I will post my catch over the next few days on Buchanan. I'm not fishing the tournament next weekend, but maybe I can help someone out.

The biggest shad you can find. They have more blood and oil. Cut the gut pocket out in a straight line, toss it. Cut the head off, then cut the back into good sized chunks. I caught a 30lb blue Friday night with cut shad.

Caught a big blue Saturday night from the banks on a perch head. First time I have ever caught a cat on a fish head. I fish from the banks so my "go to" baits recently have been cut perch, cut shad and live crawfish.

Fresh water mussels will catch too. Bust them open and dig out the mussel and catch you a biggun.
I mostly use perch though since they are easily caught. Slice the sides a couple of time to let out the juices and use them whole.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

This is what makes drift fishing so good. You cover a lot of water with your bait. I really like shad, then carp, then chicken hearts.
