I've had a musty smell in my bathroom that's been getting progressively worse, so I removed a section of sheet rock behind my shower faucet. Sure enough, I found a drip. For reasons I can't imagine, there's a thick layer of musty-moldy smelling dirt running along each side of my bathtub. I'm not talking dust, but soil at least an inch thick. I've removed as much of it as possible, but there's no way to get to it all without ripping out some serious sheet rock. My question is what can I spray on the dirt to kill the smell? All I can think of is bleach

you more than likely have termites or carpenter ants. they are drawn to the moisture. bleach will help but not cure it till you change out the shower, the moisture is under the pan etc.

it pizzes me off when builders allow contractors to use regular wallboard in wet areas just to save a few bucks.

Dude, you have problems. You've got an insect problem that's got to be fixed. You've probably got damage to the framing in that bathroom not to mention rot and mold from the moisture. Sheet rock or gypsum board is not the right material for a wet wall application. Tear it out and make it right or it will be an on-going problem from now on. Good luck.

Yup...get out the old hammer and get after it. You need to kill the bugs and treat the mold. Sheetrock is cheap. Do it now or your problem will be more expensive as time goes on.

Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Ive done mold remediation in the past and you dont want to treat it with bleach. If you kill the mold it becomes airborne more easily and thats what causes real problems. You have to tear everything out you can, dry out the rest. Treat the inside of the wall with an antimicrobial paint, then rebuild the rest with the correct wallboard. Its alot of work but better in the long run.
