A good friend just gave me the following so I might as well start painting crankbaits. What else will I need besides different paints? I already started saving milk jugs for stencils. Let me know so I can jump in with both feet on yet another hobby.

nice gift! you can get everything you need from just a few places. hobby lobby and walmart for about all you paints, brushes for clear coat, scale mask, etc. harbor freight for jewelers helping hands for holding your blanks while you paint and other odds and ends.
there are a few web sites that most of us use for blanks. "get bit custom baits", dinger, predator, dakota lakes. wlure is a site that has very inexpensive blanks. the few i've gotten were of good quality. takes a while to get stuff because it comes from china.
compressors are all over the board. the noise level you can live with will narrow the selection. harbor freight has air brush compressors for $70. i bought a senko from lowes for $129 that only generates about 55 db of noise. not bad at all. one thing you'll want is a small tank on it to hold air or it will run all the time.
start small and gradually grow your equipment.

PM sent Brad. I already have a small compressor for powder coating spinner baits and I have tons of hemostats for holding baits while painting. Any tips on my painting area would be appreciated. I guess I'll start watching YouTube vids on it now.

Barlow and captain hooks wholesale for hooks
Eyes I usually purchase from the place I'm buying the baits, or Barlow has them too

Does everyone sand their baits prior to painting, and if so what do you sand with?

Repainting stock baits or painting blanks?

Also what pattern are you doing?

Need to know these things before that can be answered.

Blanks. I'm getting supplies at the moment and haven't even started painting. Why does it matter on the pattern?

If your painting ghost patterns they require a little more prep than solid paint patterns. If your doing blanks and buy from reputable places like Dakota lakes, predator bass, dinger baits, and get bit baits. You won't have to do much prep, maybe just a little sanding at the seams top and bottom. I use a soft pad and 600 grit sandpaper.

I got the Iwata Neo that Brad recommended and it came with a .35mm tip. I can't spray anything thicker than skim milk without it clogging and it takes a ton of coats to get the color onto the bait. I have tried 10-40 psi. Any tips? I sure dislike the learning curve when I start a new hobby.

I also bought the .50mm tip. Do I need to swap the out?
