Started painting lures a couple of years ago. First blanks I tried painting were the Rapala DT knockoffs. I soon discovered that the slick sided, odd shaped, DT lures were more difficult to paint properly than many of the textured brands like the Lucky Craft KOs I sometimes paint. Bass fishing with DT style lures has shown them to be productive baits so working on getting the patterns right has been worth the effort. Anyway, after lots of trial and error Ive managed to develop a couple of patterns for the DT series that I can live with. Here are a few pictures of DT-10 KOs painted in a bluegill pattern. Each one is detailed just a little differently than the others. A special shout out to BlueMoon for offering some great ideas on photographing lures .
I started the painting process with a white base coat, then followed up with a green sprayed over the upper part of the lure. Thats followed up with a yellow..could be an orange if you want.. over the belly area. Once the paint has dried a darker green is used to create the vertical bars on the sides. Follow that up using the same green over the upper back blending the vertical bars into the center back. Now you have a good basic pattern for a bream. From this point its up to you to use your imagination and create your version of a bream. Don't forget to post your work here! Good luck on this one and happy painting.
Also, heres a ghost shad pattern that I threw together. Held up to a bright blue sky it glows like a lightbulb. It came out looking pretty niceconsidering its the first ghost Ive ever done. Im always trying to improve patterns so your constructive comments and observations are appreciated.
On another note: Over the next few weeks, in order to pay for materials, paint and lure blanks, Ill be selling a few finished lures on the TFF Trading Post. I appreciate your support and patronage. Good luck and good fishing.
