I was curious as to what kind of base coats some of you use for some of your translucent baits (Ghost style) and regular style baits. I use just regular createx white and I have had issues with it comming off in very small chips, even after I let them set over night. I do use a stencil for some of my patterns and the areas where the chips occur are where the stencil fits tight, mainly across the belly and the back. I would like to try some translucent baits, but I do not know what to use for a base coat. Thanks

Pearl and transparent paints or a combination of the 2 also a lot of the ghost base will not show up until you clear them. When I'm doing a Pearl ghost base I do 3 coats looks like there is barely any color there until you topcoat them. Less is more imo with ghost patterns if you scroll down to my works in progress post I have several pics of the process on my ghost summer shad. You can see what the base looks like before and after topcoating.
On the stencil issue try sanding the areas your having issues with using 600 grit paper to smooth the stencil up.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried some translucent baits already with a translucent base, but I never finished them with a clear coat. So... I'll finish them out and see what happens. As far as my white base coat releasing in the stencil, I thought it may have been the quality of the paint I was using. I will do a little sanding and see if that help.
Thanks

A lot of times its a rough edge on the stencil, ghost take a lot of practice to get dialed in I enjoy painting them and have had several people over when I was doing ghost and they were shocked when I topcoated them how much different they looked.

As usual Brad's advice on ghost patterns is "dead on" ....can't add anything to the conversation. As for your opaque white base coat chipping .... Createx paints are not designed for hard surfaces so they tend to be a little soft. One work around might be to let your base coat air-dry until the white color is visibly flat looking (not shining) and then use a dryer of some kind to dry (heat set) the paint. This is assuming you don't already do this. Best solution is to use Wicked or Auto-air paints and base sealers since they are specifically designed for hard surfaces. They cost more but they do dry (cross-link) much harder and stick to plastic surfaces better.

I'm working on a few new ghost patterns at the moment I'll try and post a thread with some pictures showing before and after topcoating to give a better idea on how the look. I have been doing a ton of ghost lately and they are probably the least common sold and painted that is part of the reason I like doing them. In the right situation they can be very effective on the water too.
