Went fishing on PK yesterday with two Ministry students from CFNI. Oh man was it hot on the lake. I believe the water temp this year is the hottest I've ever seen. It's 87 degrees in Neely Slough. Only way to cool off is get wet then get on plane going somewhere.

Fishing was really tough during the day. I caught two dozen nice perch for them and found some striper lounging under a deep dock in the shade but wouldn't touch them. The little perch were going crazy and making the pole tips bounce but no takers. I finally decided maybe they would take shad so I went and caught a bunch of nice shad and still would not bite. Finally at dusk after all day on the water, we caught a couple on Perch. They still would not take the shad. I had two poles with shad and two with perch and the stripers ate the perch. I think perch taste better too but I think this is odd behavior. Might be that the shad we had were too small. I guess shad need to be 5 inch plus or stripers wont take them.

This was Stephano's first fish. I guess he's ruined now.

After supper we decided to go out after dark as the guys were exicted after catching those stripers. I tried the green lights on Gaines bend first but there were no stipers there. Went over to a lighted dock I know of and it was instantly on. They lost about ten fish in the cables but still got three more. All fish caught on perch. I used some of the small shad to catch some crappie and perch. It was a decent day but until the temps come down I'm fishing exclusively at night. Hope nobody gets heat stroke in the upcoming striper tournament.

Good luck on the lights. Try to stay hydrated. It was 95 Degrees when I came in the other night at 12 am.

I didn't see much at the green lights as far as stripers. Tons of big perch though. Last year these lights were solid sand bass. If you could dip up some ghost minnows and find some trout hooks I bet you could limit out on huge Perch. PK has more magnum perch than any place I've ever seen.

Gborg: The green lights at Gaines bend did not have any stripers I could see. The deep lights were turned off and the lights in 20 feet only held massive numbers of perch eating ghost minnows. When I return from trout fishing I'm going over there and knock a hole in those perch numbers and have a nice fish fry.

It's been my experience that stripers in this hot water do not like to go shallow. Caught all mine in the last few weeks below 30 feet. They might make a quick trip up to 20 feet to eat but they won't go up in shallow water in my opinion. For me to get a bite I needed my baits below 30 and the fish I saw were from 30 to 49 feet.

I have no idea where all those sand bass I saw last year went to. Hard to believe they could have all be caught. There were thousands and thousands of them on the lights in 10 feet across from the harbor. I had some people out there last year. I dared them to try to reel a jig across those lights and not catch a fish. They could never do it. We caught and released hundreds of them that night last year.
