Flood Gates have been opened multiple times this year and last with large numbers of stripers "heading back to the Ocean" as they are programmed to do. I can still catch one keeper here and there but the bigger fish are no where to be found by me. There seems to be a few fish in the 14-18 inch range but not enough to make a dent in the shad. The fish I catch are normally at night under lights or green lights. All are fat as they can be with stomachs that look like a balloon was stuffed in them.
This past week I sat on my balcony and watched as dozens of shad balls formed on the slough and peacefully doodled on the surface. I've been on the lake for 6 years now and have never seen shad balls before at PK. I've seen them at other lakes, and Texoma used to have some big Gizzard balls in the summer when the lake was still but these are all threadfins. Last time I caught shad I had threadfins over 6 inches long in the net. I've never seen them that big before. I guess this is what happens when the primary predator is taken from a lake. Even with my poor net technique I normally have to throw over half of the shad back because I catch to many for my 17 gallon bait tank. I've actually quit fishing with shad because in the places where I mark fish the shad are 5-10 feet thick above the fish. It would be like offering a french fry to a kid who has worked at McDonalds all day.
I'd love to hear what someone thinks regarding PK who fishes there. Been interesting to see if this has happened before.

Circle of life I guess. Did all those fish end up in Granbury or Whitney? I respond to your question I would think 3 spawns would get them back to where they were this time last year. Man, last September was a striped riot!

They might have spawned this year but I have not seen the 8 inchers I saw last year. Last year at this time I could go to the cove across from neely slough and catch striper after striper. The shallow point at the ranch was very good fishing for 14-18 inch fish. You could catch them there all day. Last time I was over there my fish finder was seeing nothing but water.

There is a lot of 8" fish, I brought up a full cast net of them last trip. They were mixed in with the shad. Earlier in the year, I was catching them 4" stripers in the net sometimes.

I bet you will be surprised how many fish are left in PK. Action has picked up quite a bit with the water cooling. The floods do bring in nutrients that allow the baitfish to flourish. There are many lakes with an over abundance of baitfish and you can still catch fish. Have to be on them at the right time. Been dealing with that on Granbury/Proctor/Benbrook just to name a few for over 30 years.
They did not stock Granbury and PK in 2016 according to the stocking report on the TPWD web site (probably because they did not have enough production?) However I am catching small 6 to 8 inch stripers mixed in with the sandbass on Granbury and on PK. That could mean we had a natural spawn? I'm not a biologist, but how else would we have so many small stripers? Typically the natural spawns only work at Texoma to a degree to maintain the population without stocking. Future looks good. Hopefully they stock PK and Granbury next year regardless!
May have to contact the biologists and ask them.....They will probably not know until they do a survey.

I was/(am?) an ecologist. Stripers can spawn on the brazos but the yearly success varies greatly with water fluctuations. Striper eggs have to stay in motion in order to hatch requiring moving water and a sizable distance. Several dozen miles of river are necessary. The brazos is a river right on the threshold of what is needed for successful hatching, the flow rates can help, limit, or eliminate the natural spawn.

The larger fish are probably in survival mode right now. Need some cooler water to turn the big ones back on.Also the bigger fish might be up shallow early and late in the day.

I have caught a lot of 6" to 8" striper mixed with threadfins. Today I had some 4" also. I caught some good gizzards last week in 4" to 8" range.

I would have to agree with Mike and Steve. I have had a a few slower trips recently but the last trip wasn't so bad. There's plenty of fish.

Randy: I guess I just need to trailer up to the peninsula and fish up lake. I hate to do it but things are beyond slow at the dam.
It's good to hear that people are catching small stripers. havent seen them down lake. I see a lot of small sand bass but no small stripers. Then again, hard to catch anything in a cloud of bait. If they are here they should grow very fast unless we get a shad kill.

I saw a lot of 1" to 2" shad also under the lights while catching bait. There will be plenty for the fish to eat this fall and winter. I know in time they will thin the herd when the temps are favorable for prolonged feeding times. I have had some better trips the last few weeks on Pk. Nice striper and really big sandies are there. You just don't have all day to catch them. Early or late for just a while is what I have seen.
