I'm sure a lot of you guys are using electric knives. For those of you a little more old fashioned like myself, I'd like to know what you use to sharpen your filet knife.

I use a 3x8 inch Soft Arkansas stone to sharpen my fish cleaning knives
and my kitchen knives. I can return my knife to back-of-the-hand shaving
sharp in about a minute. I carry a 2x6 inch stone in my gear bag when I'm
on the road fishing. I use a typical honing oil for lubrication and wipe
the stone after I'm done. Just keep your blade angle consistent on the
stone and you are good.

I bought the stone from these people. Best price I've found --

I vote for a Rada two wheel sharpener. It is under $10 and works by drawing the blade through the notch where the wheels overlap each other. I get razor sharp on three pulls. It is compact and fits in your pocket.

Another item that is worthwhile learning how to use is a Butcher's Steel.

When a sharp knife initially quits cutting smoothly it is due to the edge
turning over. A Steel will quickly, with a few strokes, straighten the edge
and the knife will cut smoothly again.

Eventually the edge will not respond to the steel as it eventually wears and
the knife truly becomes dull. Then it is time to hone the edge with a stone
and "sharpen" it.

This is a simple item, basically a steel rod. Inexpensive.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got a diamond stone for a present a year or two ago, but I haven't learned to use it well yet. You can screw a blade up quick on one of those. Anyway, looking for a few easy sharpeners to try in the mean time.

This right here. Love my Worksharp! I was sold when a friend took the $8 survival knife from Harbor Freight and had it shaving my arm in short order.

Fishin' to stock Lake Crisco.

I just carry and use an Academy accusharp with me (handheld v-shape). I clean tons of ocean fish with it (Sheepshead, redfish, blackdrum). I'm sure there are better methods, but it's quick and works for me.

One 10-pounder is better than ten 1-pounders; but 100 1-pounders is ok too!

Good topic! How do you sharpen electric knife and serrated knife blades? What sharpener do you use? Not to hijack OP but this should fit in.

Not long ago I took a few knives to Bass Pro for sharpening. They used a Worksharp and after a few strokes on each blade, I had razor sharp knives. I haven't purchased a Worksharp yet but have plans to do so. I currently use a stone. It works well, but just takes longer.

I just usually run the blade on one side on the stone. I don't know if it actually sharpens it up but I seem to get a little more life out of the blade when I do that.

I now use a Block sharpener for my electric blades. I used to use a stone and just hit the flat side, but the Block is quick and easy. As for the OP, its Arkansas Stone for my conventional fillet knives.

I have used most all of them. Steel, Big John Cermaic stick, electric (have 2 of them), Lansky (work great just a pain to set up), ceramic sticks in a V. various stones, DMT Vee, and DMT folding. I am sure I missed a couple. My go to sharpener is the DMT Vee. It is 2 4" diamond steels in a block of plastic mounted in a V. Smokey Mountain Knive Works use to carry them. I am not sure if they still do. Last time I bought one I had to call DMT to locate a dealer. I resisted the temptation to go electric until about 5 years ago when someone bought me one for my Bday.

Another vote for the Work Sharp. (I spent the extra bucks for the Ken Onion edition) Easy to use, keeps every knife I have razor sharp, and there are several good videos on you tube if you need any help.
