I have read about tape on the cast net.... Please teach an old man a new trick.. What kind of tape and how do you apply it... Would like to improve my shad catch in deeper water...

Ok me& the boys. Here you go.

Spread net out on solid surface like patio or driveway. 3 or 4 inches up from weights place duct tape all the way around the net. Flip net over. Place duct tape on opposite side so it sticks to the first side with net sandwiched between them. You will not be able to get duct tape off without tearing the net so be sure this is what you want to do.
I also added a rope from a net that was torn to the rope that was on it giving me another 15 or so ft of reach.

It doesn't work well when shad are shallow a lot of the year. They scare easy and most will get away since the net sinks slower. You really need more weight for deep water netting. That is why deep water nets are so expensive. Lots of weight with the tape to keep it open longer.
This works ok but the ones available are better for catching more numbers.

I think I would use strapping tape.

Kinda, it acts like an air foil and keeps the net open during decent. It does slow it down too, that's why the more weight the better.

Not to slow it down but to keep the net open longer. Regular nets start to close almost as soon as they hit the water. So by the time they reach 12 ft or so they are mostly closed and don't cover as much area. Deep water nets you can buy have much more weight per foot than regular surf nets. So they sink faster and stay open longer.
This was just a cheaper way for me at the time.

I use the Betts 7PM-DH this is a taped deep water net - 7' 1 lb of real lead per ft - 3/8 mesh 50' hand line runs just over $100 if you search around Wholesale Marine is about $109

I consistently catch WAY more with this net than non taped nets - all year long. For the record I usually only catch bait in the very early morning hours - in the dark. This might make a difference - not sure

I have never used anything heavier than 1 lb per ft

I have used both 1 and 1.5 lb/ft and the 1.5 outperforms the 1 by a mile. It is exhausting to throw, but you only have it throw it once if you are in the right spot.
