I've only fished for hybrids a short time. On Cedar Creek, where I recently moved to. Have caught a 5-pounder and several smaller.
Last night I was hitting a lighted dock with a crank bait. The technique works well almost all the time.
One took it as soon as I started the retrieve (so not on bottom) and immediately did what they do: he ran -- FAST. I realized immediately that this was a BIG fish. I fought him for more than 40 minutes. Medium heavy quality IKE rod, Revo SX reel, 12-lb. mono. He pulled me and my 18-foot aluminum boat with 100 HP motor 40 yards one way, then another.
He would NOT tire.
I got him probably two feet below the surface and six feet from the boat a couple times, but he never came to the top. He'd just run. Then he found a brush pile on the bottom, and wrapped me up. I lost him.
Any idea how big a hybrid would have to be to fight like that? Honestly, it was the strongest freshwater fish I've ever had on.

Same thing happened to me one night under lights and I thought I had a huge hybrid! It made a normal hybrid like peel drag run and I fought it for a while. It was a big blue cat

I think y'all may be right. It probably was a big blue. I've had them run like that. I guess it was the fact that he hit it not too far from the surface that made me think it wasn't that. Sounds like those big monsters feed like game fish at times.

There is no hybrid in any lake that would take a 40 minute fight. It had to be a big catfish.

Only guessing but I would say a Big Catfish. Blue or a Flathead.

If you had landed it, all subsequent trips would have been anticlimactic. But now, you have something that REALLY holds your interest and your enthusiasm. You're lucky, you know.....

You will never know, but the striper below was over 30 inches and pulled my Tracker 175 about 100 feet with two big anchors down. When he hit the small perch I had on the boat very quickly rotated 180 degrees. If I had been standing I would have been swimming.
John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.
