What is your preferred rigging tactic for live bait? I'm mainly talking about for hybrids and stripers. I'm about to put the 55 gallon Grayline bait tank back in the boat because the lures aren't cutting the mustard.

Thread a 1oz egg sinker onto the main line and tie a barrel swivel on the end of the main line. Then tie a about 12 to 15 inch leader onto the swivel with 2/0 hook on the end. Hook the shad through both nostrils and let it soak.

We rig very similar except 18-24 inch leader, Hook shad from inside top of mouth, out tip of nose. We don't hook them too deep. They stay very lively

Same except sometimes I hook under the dorsal fin.
Sometimes it works better.

Slip sinker rig. 1-1.5oz sinker w/ a 24" leader. 3/0 circle hook and run it through the nose. Drop it and wait for the rod tip to hit the water.
In the river we do them just like catfish, on the bottom with the same rig.

I prefer to hook my shad thru the nostril side ways as they will live longer and will not swim up with your weight when hooked that way. Sometimes the hybrids are so aggressive they swallow the shad too deep head first and you have too many fish hooked too deep in the gut. Then I start to hook the shad high behind the dorsal fin. Usually 1/4" from the top of the fish. Also have to hook shad same way when the blue cats show up. They seem to bite the shad from the rear most times but not all the time. If you start missing fish when nose hooked try hooking toward the rear and see if that results in more fish on the line. I let the fish dictate what works that day. I prefer light wire J hooks for shad but I'll switch to trebles if we start missing fish. The trebles work well on the smaller blues and channel cats.

I've been hooking mine through the bottom lip. I use a Gamakatsu number 8 circle hook and a 24 inch fluorocarbon leader with a barrel swivel to the main line with a 3/4 oz egg sinker on the main line to keep the shad down.
I just find the stripers on the depth finder and drop them down a few feet above them. Most of the time, I can't keep two poles in the water.

My customers loose some hybrids on circle hooks. Hybrids are so aggressive when they grab the shad they get hooked deep in the gut. I know because I have to dig some circle hooks out that they swallow. The circle hooks sometimes pull loose and don't hook in the lip on the way out. Just seem to have better luck on hybrids with regular live bait hooks.

I use a Truturn 2/0 because they are thinner than some. I like a 3' leader because after a couple swallow it you will want to retie the hook. I use 20lb on the rod and 14 on leader. Lighter leader = livelier bait and if you get hung up you do not lose the whole rig. I have heard of people using 12 and even 10. Threadfins I hook from bottom lip up. Bigger gizzards through the nose or through the eye socket.
