Hired a guide on Lake Quachita 10/03/15. Did not catch a fish or even get a bite. There went $450. Seems like that happens a lot to me. Only good guides that I have hired has been Jackie Kennedy, Matt Cartwright and Jason on Lake Palestine.

Most guides will not charged you if you're not catching. Usually it's rescheduled. Hmmmm...interesting. One expensive boat ride. Hopefully you did learn something from him. You should always ask that question before you hired a guide. Good luck next time.

Ask him if he will reschedule. You paid for a service and got a day cruise. If he wont, share your story on the social media outlets tailored to his service.

I've been on 2 trips with highly rated guides with zero fish, both worked their butts off but just didn't work out. In these cases no guarantee or free reschedule but figured they earned their money with the effort they put in. Both were very well respected guides that knew what they were doing and at least I was splitting with a buddy.

you should post the name of the guide. Don't have to beat him down, but that would provide others who might go a little insight.

I have never been a fan of posting someones name on social media, especially when it involves someones livelyhood. My advice is to deal directly with the person you have an issue with. Even the best of the best guides can have a bad day. Just think of how many times you have fished on your own and struck out.

Think of it from the guides perspective.
Ill use twice as much fuel and get paid the same. Ill spend twice as much time and get paid the same. I wont be taking another customer on that day.
Guides sell a product that does not all ways cooperate.
I have many people who are just visiting PK and may never come back.If I give them a free trip and they go back to New Mexico and never return then I never have any return on the investment of my time, fuel, and equipment. My policy is that everyone pays there first trip.If you don't catch fish , return for a second trip and still have another bad day then I will reschedule. Most of the time this is not an issue but it does come up from time to time. Remember there customers and we want them to come back.

I agree with Randy. I work twice as hard and use twice the gas when the fish disappear plus the mental aguise. I have found if you give them a free trip they are from out of town or a first time customer they never come back to give you a chance to make the trip good. So I make modifications on the price of the trip and offer another trip at reduced rate. Don't happen often but does occasionly. You really feel bad when it does happen and I will always give them a couple of extra hours to try to make it happen. Johnny

Randy, that seems to be a very reasonable policy.

I agree with you Randy. PK fishing is so iffy now you'd go broke doing that.
I've had a few guide trips and went south. The topper was a trip on the white river that cost me $500. The guy trolled rapalas all day and we never got a nibble. I still paid him. I'm sure he burned some gas and lost a day. Using a guide you don't know is a gamble.

You have to remember that all it takes in Texas to be a guide is buying a $65 license. Not all guides are equal. Ask them if they are on fish before hiring them. Ask about guarantee of fish. Ask any question you want answered before you go out. If all they do is run from one end of the lake to the other all day all they are doing is killing time. A good guide that is on fish will only have to go to a few spots to find them, unless there is a major weather change or something. Remember that this is how they make a living and they will not always be forthcoming about the conditions because it will cost them money if they are not on the water. Try to find others that have used them and talk to them. I have had some pretty bad guides but I've also had some very good ones. I hired Darold Gleason on Toledo Bend and he was amazing, but he also had a no fish No Pay guarantee. A good guide isn't just doing it for the money. They also like to see people have a good time and maybe teach them something that will help them in the Future. Just my 2 pennies.

Guides licenses are $130.00 or so, plus another Freshwater license. It is up to us individually to be a "good" guide or just take money and be a "bad" guide. These are great threads...they help me steer clear of many potential "PITA'S"

good guides = many pounds of fish bad guides= not many pounds of fish. All guides hope this not the only thing customers consider. Guides are in business to catch fish. Nothing worse than having a bad trip. Last Thursday and Saturday for me . Caught 67 fish Thursday Saturday caught 2. Thursday good guide Saturday bad guide. I think any guide will tell you it happens to the best guides. For my trips this year I averaged 74 fish but I had two trips that were terrible. I just talk to client and come up with a solution to hopefully will allow you a chance to prove your ability to find fish. Johnny
