I'm 67. Until I was about 13 I fished with my grandmother with 'wums' for 'bream'. I found a place that is supposed to be loaded with bluegill. I have several 6.5' light spinning rods fared for 6-12lb line 1/4 -5/8 oz lures. These are now loaded with 8lb for candies. I'd rather use artificial, but might buy worms for backup. What and how would you rig to fish? I'm mainly looking for artificial. I'll be fishing a fairly large deep pond with a pier in 10' of water with little or no reachable shallow flats thanks captdavid

I put together a series of articles plus a number of guest stories. The blog covers tackle and techniques. The short answer is rig with a #8 or #6 gold Aberdeen hook on the end of your line. Move up 10 inches and pinch on a #3 split shot. Bait with a 2 inch length of Canadian nightcrawler. Fish two cranks up from the bottom close to the shady side of your pier. If no bites try slowly raising the bait. After you find fish you can then move to artificials but they will never do as well as nightcrawlers or crickets. Use small spinners or baits that resemble a spider or cricket. Smaller is better. You can find the blog here.

They will be hanging around docks and in boat slips during Mid May until Mid October. Overhanging tree limbs are also a great place to find em. I use six pound test line,size six cricket hook,with night crawlers. I Texas Rig a two to three inch piece of worm and pitch it close to docks and under overhanging tree limbs. Instead of using a sliding weight I use a regular #3 split shot about four to six inches above the hook.

On conventional gear I like to use 1/32 ounce jig heads with black/chartreuse tube jigs, small rooster tails and of course live worms. My fly gear and flies actually work much better that artificial lures in most cases though.

I catch some really nice ones on little Rebel sinking minnow crankbaits, but I use a lot of what is already mentioned as well.

Get yourself some 4lb (6lb max) Trilene XL, 1/32 and 1/16 oz jigheads and some triple tip grubs from 1" to 3". If there are sunfish there, they will show themselves on the triple tip grubs.

What are your thoughts about using 6-8lb line and a 6-12" lighter leader? I use 6lb mono or 8lb flourocarbon on all of my sunfish and crappie rigs. I'm not sure where you're fishing, but I don't think it makes a difference compared to 4lb mono in most of the waters in North Texas. In really clear water, the 4lb mono might be a better bet, but 6lb flouro would be pretty much invisible and strong enough for bigger fish. I have one of my multipurpose rigs spooled with 12 lb braid that I keep about a 6 foot flouro leader tied on and it works great for sunfish too.

I'm hoping to move to marble falls within the year. I live I port isabel now and will be making the switch from salt to fresh water. I suspect the water will be fairly clear. Captdavid

Captdavid Lots of great places to fish in that area. Lake Marble Falls (Colorado River),Perdernales River, Llano River, Lake LBJ, Inks Lake,and Lake Buchanan just to name a few places very close to Marble Falls. Water is generally clear.

The only thing I would add to this is that fluorocarbon line doesn't work well on a spinning reel. It coils and twists and causes a terrible mess. It is fine to use it as a leader tied onto a braid mainline.
