I had somewhat of a breakthrough yesterday. I was fishing for crappie in 24 fow and kept getting little bumps that anywhere else I would have thought were bream or gills, but I didn't think gills would be out here where I was fishing. After a little while I put on some smaller jigs with some of my gill baits and what do you know, breams. I caught 2 right off. Moved around and found some more. I didn't realize they would come that far out into the main lake in that deep of water. They were in 24 to 25 fow holding in 10 to 12 fow. Humminbird said the thermocline was about 15 foot. I had real good day, caught crappie, bream, and then chased bass for a while and caught some nice ones on deep weed lines in 8 to 10 fow. I am excited about this new found bream fishing. later...don

Yes, gills (especially the big ones) will go to deep water when the shallows get too hot. We usually catch a few gills each time we fish brush, during the summer.

Glad you got on em Don! During this time of year the Sunfish can be found in deeper water especially by brush piles, drop offs, and ledges. They also love hanging around docks and overhanging tree limbs.

The water temp has been in the low 90's the last couple of times I was over there. I was fishing on the Calcasieu river in Lake Charles, La, last week and I put my hand in the live well to get my catch out and the water was real hot. I guess with the river water being in the 90's and then being in the insulated live well it got that much hotter. Make sure your circulation pump is working if you use a live well. By the way, the gills and crappie slabs were very tasty tonight.
later...don
