Last week, Wednesday if my memory is correct, I fished along a lake shoreline covered with reeds and submerged hydrilla. Sunnies were tearing up my beedlespin style spinner with a plastic cricket on it. Half of them were large and the other half were magnums. I was so charged up that I could hardly wait until we went back to the same area this morning. I could not buy a bite today. Nada, zero, none! I'm scratching my head. What could have happened after five days to go from feast to famin?

For one thing last week was the full moon. They were probably actively spawning.

Another thing is the high pressure dome over the area.

The period right after the spawn is usually poor, especially on the bluebird high pressure days. Live bait fished deep and slowly will usually outperform artificials under those conditions.

Those are my guesses. Fish are not always predictable. It will be interesting to hear from the others on the forum.

I think the full moon had something to do with it. I don't think I was fishing over spawning beds, however, because the reeds are thick out off shore, and hydrilla is on the bottom. But, I don't know, they could be spawning under the vegetation for all I know. I've fished for bass for more years than most people have lived and have fewer questions about them, but there is still a lot I don't know about bream/sunfish, although I've fished for them off and on all these years. To my long-time fishing buddy's shagrin, I find my interest changing more and more in favor of sunnies and less for bass.

On the next trip to the lake, I will definitely take a carton of night crawlers. One thing I have learned is that when they ignore artificial bait, night crawlers will often save the day. I just didn't think I would need live bait today because of how aggressive they were last week. Glad I have acces to this forum. Can learn a lot from you guys, for which I'm grateful.

I know the feeling. I tell my buddies I'm turning into a "Perch fisherman", LOL. There are so many beautiful species that can be caught in creeks, ponds, rivers and lakes. Exploring and catching fish of any species on a fly rod or ultralight rod is great fun.

Agree completely J-Moe. I don't have access to a lot of ponds, creeks, and places to fish for sunfish without making pretty long drives, but I can fish for them while my buddy fishes for bass, when we go to the lake every week in his boat. Also, I'm thinking about getting a kayak to use at times when he is out of town. If I do decide to get one, I will use it to fish for sunnies. I enjoy light spinning gear, but I also enjoy fishing with my four-weight fly rod at times.

Make sure you get a kayak with a comfortable seat. I have an upgraded seat in mine and my back still hurts after about an hour. Demo a few first.

Heard you J-Moe. I like what I hear and read about a Malibu Mini X sit-on-top kayak. Is relatively light and stable. Would need to buy a good seat for it. Haven't decided for sure to get one, but am considering it.

Don't feel bad. Same thing happens up here. last week a couple days after the rains I caught a couple dozen along the shore on Mepps. Went out two days ago and could see them feeding on the surface but didn't catch a one on small jigs. Frustrating for sure.

Kjwolvy, good to know it happens to others, not just me. Definitely frustrating.
