I am having fun catching the little bluegills that inhabit the shallows on our pond.

My druthers is to catch some bigger one...even frying size.

So, my question is about how they behave. When I find the little ones, are there bigger ones around, or should I move on? It seems to me that when I find the little ones, there are never bigger ones around.

Depends on the condition and size of the water body. I have caught very nice Bluegill in ponds that are not that big. They are usually in the deeper parts of the pond hanging on the bottom. A lot of the times the smaller fish are the more aggressive and usually get your bait. Try fishing the deeper areas of your pond. Also I find that artificial lures such as Rooster tails, jigs, and small soft plastics, usually catch the bigger sunfish mainly because the smaller fish can't get the bait. In the bigger water bodies nice Bluegill love hanging around brush piles, docks, inside boat slips, and under overhanging tree limbs. Depending on the time of year Bluegill will be in their patterns. They are very aggressive fish and it does not take long to find out if they are in a spot or not. thumb

Side Note: I use night crawlers about 95 percent of the time and catch some nice ones year around! hooked I also love using the Gulp Alive Night Crawlers. hooked

The deeper areas are more than 60 feet deep. I did not think gills like it that deep. Big catfish live down there. This is an old pond. Not many docks, and not much wood.

Holy Cow that is a deep pond! eeks There should be bigger Bluegill in your pond. Try fishing in areas 8' to 15' deep. Fish off the bottom. Also if there are any grass or weed beds fish by them as well. Try finding brush piles in that depth as well (8' to 15'). 7" Gills and up are good for the dinner table! thumb

I try to find shell beds. There are some nice shell crackers here, but they are tough to catch. One has to go down into Tennessee to find any grass. I fish th TN side a lot, but no grass this year.

I have been catching some yellow perch. I am told they make great table fare.

I never had yellow perch before but have friends who have eaten them. They all say they are super good eating. food

Side Note: Also fish drop offs in the 8 to 15' range. Bluegill sometimes will stack on the ledges. hmmm
