I got a shipment of 500 superworms, the larvae of the large darkling beetle. I have them all bedded down in oatmeal ready to take to the lake Wednesday. I was surprised to see how big they are. My question is: has anyone used Superworms for bait before for bluegill? How do they compare with other baits? Hopefully I will get some data to report this week.

Those things give me the heebie jebbies. Ive gotten a can before to feed my fish and hate how they feel in my hands.
Best of luck though, hope they catch you a bunch of fish, wouldn't surprise me if some Bass get a little curious. Look forward to your report.

I've used them. My son used to have a bearded dragon lizard that would eat those. You don't have to refrigerate so when I didn't have nightcrawlers, I'd grab the tub of them instead. They squirm like crazy on the hook. Bluegill tear them up and as Fitz said, if you use a whole one especially, the smallish (for here) bass nail those things.

I have used them.They are good.I had them and crickets
At Lake Sam Rayburn for big gills.The crickets out fished the larve.The larve were more active and lived longer under water.

I like the one size smaller,..or use them in halves,..them little breams will steal those pretty quick..

I would think regular worms would be easily more available. Always love seeing how different baits will work. Let us know the results.

I used the superworms yesterday. Although the bite was very poor I think I got more hits off superworms than off nightcrawlers. I need a better day to be sure.
Nightcrawlers are more readily available and work just fine. They are also easier to store. I just wanted to try the superworms. They cost me $15.00 postage paid from an internet store. I have them in oatmeal in an old two gallon popcorn can. I put a few in a small Tupperware container to take to the lake.

I used them all last summer. You can boy a carton of 50 at Petsmart for about $6.00 as I recall. I also used night crawlers. Sunnies seemed to love nightcrawlers and the superworms equally. That is, both are very good baits for sunnies. One advantage to the superworms is that they are clean, not as messy as nightcrawlers. But I like both.

I've used them. They work pretty well, but the bluegill knock them off the hook pretty easy.
I still maintain that the superior bait for bluegill in all respects are maggots. Also called "spikes". The larvae of the Blue Bottle Fly.

Most places that sell live bait do not carry super worms. Like stated night crawlers are so much easier to buy and handle.

I used the superworms again at Joe Pool today. They definitely get a lot of bites, but fewer hook ups. The fish manage to get the superworm off the hook without getting caught.
The sunfish are still slow and small. They are still in deeper water in spite of the warm air temperatures. The next full moon is April 22nd and I doubt if they will spawn then. We will probably have to wait until May in North Texas.
