Since the corps of engineers is not letting much water out of Joe Pool Lake I am pretty much limited to pond fishing. In order to extend the cool morning I started at 5:30 while it was still dark. The pond bottom is full of pond weed so a bobber is a must, and I used one of the new Thill 4 inch lighted bobbers this morning.

It worked pretty well. It is a good thing I started early because by 8:00 AM the bite was all over. The fish came from shallow water right next to the cattails and from the deeper water by the edges of the weed beds.

There has been a lot of loud argument lately on what makes the sunfish stunted in a lake or pond. The biggest bluegill are about 7 inches and the hybrid green/bluegill run to 8 inches. The fish are fat and healthy. The pond has plenty of vegetation. It is full of 14 inch black bass and 11 inch bullhead catfish. Fishing is largely catch and release. There seems to be no reason the bluegill should be stunted except maybe genetics. The pond was stocked 25 years or so ago but not lately. It would benefit greatly from a fresh infusion of genes from large stocked fish.

I also saw several large birds feeding in the grass and in the cattails. Maybe one of the bird experts can tell me what they are.

That's a healthy little fishery you have there. I don't think it's any one thing that stunts or promotes growth. I used to fish a 2 acre pond in Round Rock that was only stocked once in the early 90's and it had tons of huge red ear, bluegills, and LMB. My PB out of there were 11.5" red ear, a 10" bluegill, and 24" 8lbs LMB (and there was an even bigger LMB lurking in there). In my opinion I think they got so big in this tiny pond because of a combination of things. Their habitat was 2/3 covered in Lilly pads, tons of frogs and other food for them, lack of fishing pressure, and there was also a large fountain in the middle of it, so the water was never stagnant. I sure do miss that place. It dried up a few years ago and I moved away.

Nice variety of fish! I used the lighted floats last week while fishing for Crappie. They worked very well.

A lot of it is genetics and then I would say food supply, water quality, and enough predators to keep the population in check. The Florida Coppernose grows larger and faster than our native Bluegill. Sadly the TPWD seldom ever stocks them??? Also Bruce Condello @ bigbluegill.com is working on several genetically superior varieties of Bluegill. Pictured below is a coppernose bluegill. Notice the copper-gold color on the head. This color is absent on our natives
