I’ll buy cheap rods, but I quit buying cheap reels a while back. I’d rather have a decent non bait runner reel (cabelas salt striker) that I can just loosen the drag on than a knock off baitrunner reel from China. They just won’t last.

Atleast that way cabelas can refund him if he has a problem. I’m sure the king Kat reels are about the same quality as the eBay reels, but I’d fee better buying them from a store than from a random Chinese eBay company.

I have three of the king cat bait feed combos that I bought about six years ago but I have not done a lot of carpeting in the last six years -they seem to be an Okuma reel ?

I think salt strikers are made by Okuma. Didn’t realize that about the king Kats. They’ve always felt kinda cheap when I’ve looked at them in store.

The Blue King Kat Reels Suck - Cheap 1 bearing Reel. these are different......not as Nice as the Salt Strikers but not Turds like the Blue Reels.... https://outdoortrailsnetwork.com/buy-or-bust/cabelas-king-kat-baitfeeder-combocan't link them on Cabelas site cuz they are no longer available........at One Time the Texas State Record Carp or Buffalo had been caught on one of these combos by One of them Guys who used to be on Here 6-8 yrs ago.......then he moved on to Higher end stuff.......

Reason to move to higher end reels is very simple: it is smart thing to do. Last time I was looking for a BR reel happened couple years ago: my reel are all in a great working conditions! Example: I'm still using my Shimano Baitrunner 4500 bought in year 2000. It was salt water fishing for couple years, but now it is 100% carp. No parts was needed, just cleaning. Beat it: $100 payed in y2000 for the reel you still can trust big time!
Light tackle carp fishing vet. PB carp: common 27lb - mirror 27.5lb - grassy 42lb - ghost 14lb

True but as with just about any New Hobby, Activity Most people start off with cheaper stuff to see if they like it and upgrade when they really get into it. Buddy doesn’t want to invest a lot of $ to start with - so trying to find the Best of the Cheaper Stuff.

OKUMA avenger serie is definetly a terrific reel for the price. 6500 model is about 50$ may be 65$ for the 8500. I got a couple Kastking pontu 5000 that work well for carps (about 25$ I think). I use baitfeeders also for alligator gars, but for a 150lbs gar, I definetly prefer Okuma.

I used to run 3 of those when I had my carp gear. Loved them. If I fish for carp now, I just close the bail and looses my drag all the way. Then tighten it as they are running. Works just fine.
