i wrote this on social media after releasing this gar, it went 7 foot 1 inch and was likely around 180 pounds

This feeling is hard to describe. Just released a 7 foot dinosaur back into a river it's species has called home for 147 million years. I'm sitting in a little cove i released her in just kind of pondering life. Sat here for 30 minutes almost, listening to the cars on The highway just a mile or two away not even caring 10 feet away I could have been in the shade. Solo the experience of catching a gar over 7 foot is hard to describe hopefully the video and pics do her justice. This is my 6th alligator gar over 100 pounds of the year and I'm going to say she was close to 180 pounds caught in a river not publicly known for having gar, she was released healthy to promote the longterm survival of the species.

Location is central Texas
the bait used is common carp
line used is 100# suffix performance braid
rod is an ugly stick
reel is a Okuma Trio BF 80

you will never see my kill an alligator gar on this channel i am 100% dedicated to promoting these fish's longterm survival, so they can grow and thrive for another 100,000,000 years.

do to the hard nature of targeting these fish and the proneness for people to kill them just to do it there is certain information im no longer going to be sharing in my videos. im comfortable showing just a little less if it means i can help protect these fish.

thanks for watching - SharkBait

I'm with you, I would love to get one on a fly rod. CPR is the only way.

I hate what I see people do to gar as well, I've caught much much hell for talking about it on this forum.

I have a question. last night I was catfishing and I hooked into a gar. This has happened a few times, but I can never actually LAND the fish. I can get him to the edge of the water and get really close, but they always throw the hook at the very lase second, the hook is still there, so it's not breaking the line or anything. Now, this wasn't a very big gar, so I don't think it was a weight issue. I was using a circle hook with cut perch, on a ugly stick with team catfish monofilament.

Is there a trick to landing these fish?

yes 3/0 non stainless treble hook is the only hook i use for them, its the only hook to use for responsible catch and release, once you get it to the bank i would lasso them like i do in my videos, be sure to get the rope behind the pectoral fins to protect the gars gills.

Good advice ty. I am surprised a bit, you say treble hooks. I use circle hooks to keep from gut hooking cats so I can CPR them. I switched from trebles because I was gut hooking too many of them. Different fish anatomy I suppose. Thanks Again.
