I'm a long time catfisher and would appreciate any advice on how to get after some gar! The places I go for big cats usually have a pretty decent gar population, so finding them won't be hard I have two 7' poles and one 9' pole, all three are heavy action, with Penn Fierce 6500 spinning reels, 65# braid and heavy terminal tackle. Thanks in advance!

depending on what kind of gar your after. your equipment is fine for long nose and spotted gar. now if your after alligator gar i recomend 100# braid minimum. 65# will pop on a power hookset. plus you never know when you'll hook onto a 100# plus fish. good luck and post a report

Heavy terminal tackle is 100# or better wire, ball bearing swivels, and 3/0-5/0 treble or 8/0-10/0 big river bait hooks. From the bank you need to do like gar1970 said and get bigger line. 100 to 150 braid. Those reels may be ok for now but sometimes they get upset about the drag pressure. I had a set when they came out and they lasted me 3 trips. I went to spin fisher live liners and they do good for me. Good luck, I've got some good ones from the bank and so has gar1970.

Is there a better/preferred time of day to get onto them?

I suggest you hire a guide for a day, they'll take the guesswork out and show you proper technique, rigging, setup, etc. Maybe some tips on how to find good spots throughout the season as well. Well worth it in my book.
PB common = 41 lbs PB mirror = 22.5 lbs PB buff = 26 lbs

That depends on the time of year. Spring and early summer mornings are better. If your stuck on the bank you need to wait for the water to drop and tour going to have to d some driving for a gar. Not many bank spots but a few
