Planning on getting more crappie gear, but not sure if I really need a 5',7',9', 10', or all of them for different situations.
I was hopig to get some input of what length rod works best for these areas:
1. Dock shooting
2. Bridge columns
3. Standing timber
4. Deep brush piles
5. Any other senario

Personal preference plays the biggest factor with rod length selection. You'll get a lot of different answers.
1: 5-6 ft
2 thru 4: 8-10 ft.
5: Unless you want to spider rig in shallow water, the above will cover anything you intend to do.
Some people like a good 7 ft med light action rod to cover just about all situations. I'll fish an 8 ft most of the time unless it's spring and I'm fishing shallow, then I'll have the 10 ft in hand. If I'm the second guy in the boat, not running the troll motor, I'll also have the 10 ft.

I use a 6'6" ultralite for everything. I can shoot docks if I want with it. Mostly fish pillars, timber and docks though.

I use a 12' for everything, but I don't dock shoot. I like a bit more backbone in my rods and that's hard to find in a 10'er. If I have the need to go shorter I just choke up on the rod a bit.

Actually... I just stepped on the tip of my rod last weekend, so now it's about 11' realmad

I now have only two poles. A 4.5' and a 9' rod. Works well for everything.

Rod Length truly is a personal preference.

I fish with an 8 FT rod most of the time.

Spring Time I do have a 12 footer that I use occasionally.

Brands of Rods Again a personal preference:

I'm a huge fan of TICA rods.

I also like BnM and Pro Angler rods.

I have a couple G-Rods as well.

On a previous rod thread someone mentioned a Crappie Rod that I had never heard of...

http://www.southerncrappierods.com/

I decided to check them out.

I bought two 8 Footers that I have been fishing with for the last 4 weeks. I am very pleased with the rods and the price is perfect for a great Crappie Rod.

All the rod brands I have mentioned above are great rods.

I have to say though that I am really enjoying my new 8 Footers from Southern Crappie Rods and the price is great.

A very well made, sensitive, and light rod that has been catching me some nice Crappie.

Just passing on some info from my own personal experience.

Good Luck in whatever you decide to go with.

If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a message.

Them Southerncrappie rods are decent rods. I own a couple 9' myself.
I just put up a video of us trying out two new rods. The rods are called ACC Crappie Styx. These are probably going to become our favorite rods.

1. Dock shooting 5.5' lIGHT ACTION.
2. Bridge columns 8' OR 9' PRO ANGLER WITH 6" CUT OFF TIP.
3. Standing timber "
4. Deep brush piles "
5. Any other scenario "

For any hand held rod anything over 9' wears my arms out, especially if it's windy.

Just my pref. I prefer a little stiffer rod than most. I would avoid ultra lite rods.

I like a 6-7' light action for dock shooting. Shorter is more accurate, but a 7' will skip your bait out the other side of the dock.
I usually use a 7' for everything else, but I'm in the market for a 10' g-rod.

It really depends were and how you fish. I use a 5.5 or 6ft rod for dock shooting. For bridge columns fishing it depends on the lake. At Tawakoni I use a 6 footer because there is not alot of overhead room. For Lewisville and Hubbard and I use a 7 footer. I also use a 7 footer on brush piles. I use a nine footer in the spring because being able to reach the shallow brush is crucial. It's the only time I use a real long rod. I like medium light or light action rods. Ultra lights are too whippy for me. If I could only use one rod it would be a 7 footer.

My personal preference is 6'6" ML or M depending on the rod. I also have a 6'9" ML rod as well as a couple of 6'0" L rods. I have one 10' rod that I rarely use. But my normal rods that I use 99.9% of the time are the 6'6" rods. The 6'0" rods are used when there is a low clearance under a bridge or if the wind keeps me too close to bridge columns.

I have the habit of fishing to fast, and the long rods just makes it faster. I do the best with 6-7 foot rods. In the cold months when most times need to hold it still I use a 5 1/2 foot.

7' Medium Light rod. Most Medium Light rods have a light tip for feel, but good backbone for control.

G Rods has an exceptional ML crappie rod, although expensive, and, if you can even find one. Cream of the crop.

St Croix makes a 7' ML in both their premier and Triumph line. Moderately priced.

For the budget minded, you can't go wrong with a Pro-Angler.
