You know how your crappie jig bodies get oily when left in the heat all summer? Does this effect strikes or do the fish even care?

I haven't found it to do so.

The oil is used to keep the jigs soft and pliable. If you leave them out in the elements or direct sunlight too long the oil will evaporate or breakdown and the jig will be harder and the action will be significantly less and the plastic will break easily on bites.
That is why some people use fish oil on older jigs that need a boost of oil to keep them moving lively. Just put a few drops in a bag of plastics and you are back in business. The fish oil also helps as an attractant.

Mineral oil works well to soften and juice them up when they get dry and sticky.
I believe this is what the factory uses to package new soft rubber baits in for retail.
Just a warning though, be careful some types of fish attractants (the old baitmate brand for exp.) will make your baits get stiff or melt.
Barlow's sells some flavored oils that are safe if you want grape, watermelon, strawberry etc. .

anise oil from Krogers mixed with olive oil works great!

Thank you guys for your replies; much appreciated. I bought a ton of Crappie Thunder bodies for my Road Runners last Spring and stored them in the garage throughout the entire Summer. When I opened the plastic container I stored them in, I found the jig bodies oily and sticky...just nasty! I was curious if the fish can smell or taste it and deter any bites. I'll try your suggestions and see how it works.

also be careful what type of plastic box you put plastic baits in as they will melt just normal plastic.you need need worm proof box's like Plano

Yes soft plastic mfg ask customers if they want a mineral oil finish. I buy from 4 vendors, some use a mineral oil, some do not.

What is the mix ratio of 100% anise oil to olive oil?

I might give that a try on some older plastics.

really dont need much Anise oil.its just for sent.i use like 2 tbl spoons to a cup of olive oil. you can also use liquid garlic extract.
