Took my year and a half lab out yesterday for some water work and decided to stay and see if we could catch a fish and enjoy the sunset. First #1. Throwing a chartreuse and black squarebill off the bank covering a point, hooked a 13" crappie! Thought hmm. Maybe he's not alone so picked up my spinning rod and tied up a double 1.5" curl tail grub and kept canvassing the area. Caught 2 more 9" crappie. First #2. Picked up my second spinning rod that I had just spooled with 10lb hi viz braid and a 4 lb flouro leader (never tried it) feels great and no line twisting. First #3, on that rod I fished a bonehead stump bug salt n pepper (first try with bonehead) under a float and caught a dozen or so over the next hour, most 9.5" but 3 more keepers. First #4. Putting my last keeper on the stringer I looked back and my pole was getting dragged into the water, I was like man I got a big one!!! I did, 70 lbs to be exact. Of the 3 crankbaits I had on and the 3 jig rigs I tried before the bonehead, Hattie my lab looked the other way, but she slurped that stump bug up and was hooked in the lip dragging my pole around. So after taking my pliers and unhooking her, I need to speak to somebody at bonehead, their baits are too delicious looking

Sounds like an epic day Good read
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

I've caught and performed surgery on a few dogs before when I was a kid. Performed surgery on a few more when older.
How'd the water work go?

when I was a kid, fishing with a friend named Emile, he reared back for a long cast with a catfish pole and hooked his lab in the testicles.. I will never forget the sound that dog made. It sounded like a high performance race car doing a burnout, and a high pitched womans voice screaming at the top of her lungs, with slight nuances of the sound a bullfrog makes when a water moccasin strikes them.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

How'd the water work go? Water work went really well, she's s little champ, I just have to not screw it up! She caught the second split last year and picked up for teal season right where she left off.. We worked consistently throughout the summer though too And yes she's fine, weirdest thing, you would think that having a hook ripped out of your lip would slow you down, but she just ran off and went back at it. Looked last night and today and I can't even find where it was in her lip.. Was super windy yesterday again so I headed to the same spot to see if there was a pattern and caught 8, all like 1/2" short or less of keepers. It's crazy how they school with fish that all measure within a 1/2" of each other! Caught them in about 6-8 fow off the back side of a sandy point. The big waves were muddying the water and right where the defined line of stained and normal water on the back side of the point was I could catch sandies, bass and crappie. The crappie were all caught about a foot or 2 in the stained water, I guess waiting to ambush whatever was getting blown across that point, like my stump bug!
