I spent 4 hours on the water this afternoon. It was a light wind all afternoon, but there were so many play boats on the lake that the water stayed pretty rough. A lot of the lake still has a brown tinge to it, but seems to be slowly clearing a bit. I had to look at my water temp reading several times to believe it: 88 degrees. That's 10 degrees higher than I saw last week. It was a bit hot today, too. Summer has arrived.

In spite of all the bouncing around on the waves I was doing, the fish bit well. I ended up catching 26 keepers. Most were black crappie, but I caught a couple of really nice white crappie, too. There seem to be a lot of small crappie showing up at some of my spots now, and I probably caught more small fish than keepers.

The fish were caught 9 to 10 feet deep, in 10 to 20 feet of water, on brush and concrete. In the more shallow water, swimming a jig very slowly near the bottom seemed to be the best technique, but the fish that were suspended in the deeper water seemed to want the jig sitting perfectly still. The fish bit 1/16 oz jigs rigged with my homemade plastic shad. Green-chartreuse, pearl chartreuse pepper, and dark gray shad colors all worked well. All fish were released today.

Today's best fish was a white crappie.

They were taking that bright green-chartreuse plastic shad pretty deep today.

Hey Bud how does the pup do with the life jacket? I have one for mine, but worry that he will get too hot with it on.

Put the plug in.

Yes, dogs get hot with a life jacket on in the summer. Any time Pixie starts panting in the boat, I give her a quick dunk in the lake. Dog life jackets have a handle on top that makes it pretty quick and easy to get a small dog in and out of the water.

Sounds like a great plan!

It was an even better bite this afternoon. No monsters, but I caught 38 keepers.
