Jig & bobber set ups are used primarily for shallow spawning crappie. Although, I have been known to set up a deep slip cork for kids to fish over the top of brush piles.

Are you fishing out of boat or shore? Right now the crappie are switching to the summer pattern which means deeper water. If your fishing out of a boat try it without the bobber. You'll better learn what the THUMP feels like and you won't have to mess with a cork. If you're bank fishing then yes, use a slip bobber to keep your bait at the right depth. Good luck.
